Chapter 11

Twenty minutes later, with dinner simmering on the stove, Vail debated heading upstairs to apologize to Macon. The thing was, he wasn’t sure why he should be the one to say sorry. Sure, Vail probably shouldn’t have said Macon should leave if he didn’t like Lakota, but he also hadn’t been the one to act like Lakota was Jack the Ripper.

He was still angry about Macon’s treatment of Lakota, which was why he had yet to go up there and check on his cousin. Normally he wasn’t one to put things off, but this time, he just wasn’t sure he was ready to talk to Macon. Not when his cousin so clearly didn’t like the man Vail was falling for.

And that was another thing. He barely knew Lakota, yet it felt like he’d know the guy forever. There was just something about Lakota that put Vail at ease. Like he could be himself, which was an entirely new experience for him.

Vail couldn’t remember there ever being a time when he didn’t have to portray himself as the strong one. The one who was always there for his family, even if he had no clue what to do himself. He’d gotten so used to doing it, Vail thought that was just who he was.

But for those few moments when he’d been falling apart and Lakota had held him, that need to be strong disappeared. It was replaced by a longing for someone else to take care of things, to take care of Vail.

As much as he enjoyed the sensation of those arms around him, Vail wasn’t sure how to handle this new part of himself. Up until that moment, Vail didn’t even know it was something he wanted, nor was he sure he should allow it.

He heard the door to the mudroom open and Loki yapping away like a lunatic. “Loki, calm down,” Lakota admonished. “You know I can’t get your leash off if you don’t sit still.”

Not more than two seconds later, nails scrapped along the flooring as Loki came tearing through the house. Vail prepared himself, thinking Loki was going to greet him, but Loki completely ignored him as he raced through the living room and up the stairs.

Unsure what was going on, Vail turned to stare at Lakota who shrugged. “Hell if I know. Loki started scratching at the door as if the hounds of hell were chasing him.”

Sharp yips came from upstairs along with growling. “I have no idea what spooked him out there, but it is possible it was a bear.”

Vail felt his eyes go wide. “A bear?”

Lakota chuckled as he came up to Vail and put his arms around him. “You do live in the woods, my flame. There will be bears and other wild animals who come onto your property from time to time.”

Sure, logically Vail knew bears lived in the woods, but he’d never really thought about one being so close to his house. Loki’s frantic yapping increased. He glanced in the direction of the stairs.
